What exactly is HVAC?
The term HVAC simply refers to Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. You may sometimes see HVACR, the R standing for Refrigeration. While technically the same trade as air conditioning, refrigeration deals more with keeping food items from spoiling such as the large freezers you see in the supermarkets.
Should I do anything to my A/C?
Most A/C systems require little in the way of maintenance compared to other appliances such as a furnace. If you have an outside condenser (the square/rectangular metal appliance with a fan on top or on the side) you may want to ensure the fins of the coil are clean and not plugged. You can simply take a garden hose and gently wash out the coil to allow airflow to move freely (do this while the unit is off). Make sure the insulation on the pipes is not torn or missing. Listen for any abnormal sounds from the fan - it should start up quickly and hum along nicely.
How about my Furnace?
This one is more important from a safety perspective as most furnaces use a flammable fuel source to provide heating. Because of this it is recommended to have them inspected yearly to check things like gas pressure, temperature rise and to perform a visual inspection of the components.
What do I do if something stops working?
Firstly, always think about your safety. A good rule of thumb if your furnace stops working is to start with the simple things first. Turn the power to the appliance off. Check the air filter as this is a common cause of furnace and a/c failures. Turn the power back on after a few minutes - this may reset some simple issues. Listen for abnormal noises. Notice any unusual smell - if you smell gas (rotten egg smell) exit the home immediately, calling 911 from OUTSIDE (never use a phone or touch anything electrical inside if a gas leak is suspected).
What safety precautions can I take?
It is now the law to have Carbon Monoxide detectors installed inside of your home if you have a fuel burning appliance. Purchase a reputable detector and install one on each floor of your home, including the basement. Some newer detectors are designed to alert to the smell of natural gas as well as carbon monoxide. Remember, a smoke alarm is not the same as a carbon monoxide or natural gas detector. Smoke alarms are also required by law on every floor of the home. These are proven life savers - no ifs, ands, or buts about it!
Have a reputable and licensed professional inspect your equipment at regular intervals. You take your car, bike, bicycle or lawnmower for service, give your furnace and/or other appliances some attention too! They also have important jobs to do.
How often should I replace my air filter?
This question is a very commonly asked one and there is no one answer that fits every situation. If you have thick carpeting, pets, are a smoker and have several people living in the home then you will have to replace your filter more often than someone living with no carpet, pets and who is a non smoker. Other things like dust from nearby construction sites may also add to a filter becoming dirty (even though your house may be well sealed, every time you open a window or door you allow some outside air inside). I recommend pulling your filter out once per month and having a look at it. When it starts to look fully dis-coloured and you can't see much light through it, it may be time to replace it. For most homes a good rule of thumb is once per season, or four times per year.
What type of filter do I need?
So many types on the market! It gets confusing. Some appliances require a specific type of air filter. However, the majority of natural gas furnaces can use most types, from a washable to a media to a pleated type. I do not like washables as much as they tend to start degrading over time and also most of them do not provide a high enough level of filtration. Pleated filters with a MERV rating of 6 or 8 will provide you more than adequate filtration, unless you have allergies which may require a higher MERV rating. Remember, it is the MERV rating that matters, not the fancy packaging or name brands that charge an arm and leg for a filter.
And a MERV rating is...?
An efficiency rating for air filtration products. MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value - a fancy way of saying how well the filter traps particulate. The higher the number the more particulate is captured by the filter material. This does not mean that the higher number is best for all applications. A higher number also means more restriction to airflow. Some furnaces and heat pumps require larger amounts of airflow and will not function properly if the filter is of too high a MERV rating
